
Food: The local specialties are served with rice, and are based on chicken and lamb recipes.
A Bengali dish is beef (sometimes mutton, chicken, fish or egg) and vegetables cooked with hot spices, sauces, mustard oil, yellow watery lentils (dal) and rice.
The fish is part of the main diet; however, overfishing has led to a shortage of freshwater fish and other marine fish that often appear in the menus.
Alcoholic beverages are not very accessible and are in short supply, except in five star hotels.
Climate: Bangladesh has a semitropical climate and monsoon.
Its summers are extremely hot and humid (March to June), reaching over 45 º C and winters, dry and relatively cool (October to March). From June to October is the monsoon season, fresh and moist, with a danger of flooding.
The best time to go is in winter, avoiding the scorching summer and the monsoon season.
Light clothing is recommended for hot weather and humid and fairly light clothes for the brief winter (December to February).
Transport: The communications and transport in Bangladesh run pretty badly. However, the Dhaka International Airport many international flights arrive.
There are roads between India and Bangladesh. The main roads are in Calcutta, which goes to Haridispur Benopol, that of Darjeeling, which goes to Haldibari Chilihari, and Shillong, from Tamabil to Dawki. There may be officers who say they cannot go on these roads but politely insist, many travelers are able to cross the border by road.
The roads leading into Myanmar (Burma) were closed in the 50s, and now have been swallowed by the jungle.
Transport within Bangladesh is very cheap. The rule is: “If you want to sit down and learn to push up early and kick like the rest of the travelers.”
Biman, the largest national carrier, has flights to 10 different cities in Bangladesh, starting from Dhaka, including Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar. Domestic flights are very cheap but still cost three times more than the train tickets in first class.
